DAY 3

19 01 2012

ROUND 3 of Corona Trial goes to the prosecution.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

To be fair, the prosecution panel scored big on Day 3. The first prosecution witness, the High Tribunal’s clerk of court Enriqueta Esguerra-Vidal was compelled to turn over to the impeachment court the envelope that contained copies of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s statements of assets, liabilities and net worth or SALNs. This development should be credited to the efforts of the lead prosecutor. So congratulations… Frank Drilon.

Clerk of Court Enriqueta Esguerra-Vidal turned over to the impeachment court copies of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s statements of assets, liabilities and net worth defying an existing Supreme Court resolution prohibiting the release of the magistrates’ SALNs. After testifying for the prosecution, Vidal, who was allowed to leave, went straight home and updated her résumé.

Based on Chief Justice Renato Corona’s SALNs, his net worth jumped from P14.96 million in 2002 to P22.9 million in 2010. That’s an increase of P8 million. Or as a congressman would say, “three terms.”

According to Budget Sec. Florencio Abad, Chief Justice Renato Corona cannot afford a multimillion-peso condominium unit considering his salary as a government official. Unless, of course, he works at the Bureau of Customs.

Day 3 may have “gone” to the prosecution as the Inquirer bannered but the blunders of the private prosecutors cannot be ignored. Leading questions, hypothetical questions and questions that tend to ‘cross examine’ their own witness were objected to by the defense and sustained by the presiding officer. The 83-year-old Serafin Cuevas was just too much for the hotshot prosecution lawyers. It’s like watching Meryl Streep in an intense, dramatic exchange with Megan Fox.

Justice Sec. Leila De Lima denies allegations that she facilitated the release of documents from the Land Registration Authority (which is under the DOJ) to be used as evidence against Chief Justice Corona. She refused to comment on rumors though that she is the inspiration for the prosecution panel’s frequent press conferences.

In Other News
In protest of an anti-piracy legislation in the United States, free online encyclopedia Wikipedia blacked out its site for 24 hours. But that’s nothing compared to the prosecution panel which has been blacking out for two days now.

Reports say Wikipedia is down. To which, Niel Tupas and company said, “We can relate.”

Wikipedia has shut down. And retired Justice Serafin Cuevas was like, “Ano ‘yon?”

In support of Wikipedia’s battle against censorship, Sen. Lito Lapid has decided to keep his mouth shut during the entire Corona impeachment trial.

Associate Justice Mariano Del Castillo isn’t worried at all. Even before Wikipedia could black out its site, he was able to copy all the information he needed.

For 24 hours, Wikipedia is blacking out its site. Or as millions of students worldwide would call it, “end of the world.”

Quote of the Day
“The impeachment proceedings are a learning experience for us. We have to relearn trial techniques like the presentation of evidence. We will get better as the impeachment trial progresses.”
~ Prosecution panel spokesperson Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada

Briefly Noted
The Daily Tribune’s Niñez Cacho-Olivarez revealed ABS-CBN’s “ties” to the prosecution panel. She wrote:
“Five members of the prosecution panel, acting as private prosecutors for the trial are all high officials of the Lopez-owned ABS-CBN network. The five private prosecutors are Maximilian Uy — chief legal counsel, assistant corporate secretary; Mario Bautista — general counsel, legal services; Manuel Torres — corporate secretary; Maximilian Joseph Uy — legal services and assistant corporate secretary; and Enrique Quiason — assistant corporate secretary.”

Enjoy the rest of the week! Stay safe.

the way senator-judges questioned atty. vidal on day 3 of the trial was like disrobing themselves and showing their true colors.

prosecution team somewhat recovered from day 2 debacle, no thanks to the distinguished gentleman from iloilo, frank drilon.

defense team tried hard to stop or delay the release of corona’s saln’s but they are no match to frankie. in the first place why delay when cj corona claimed that out of 45 alleged properties he only owns 5, unless of course otherwise.

What’s in it for ABS-CBN? Aren’t media organizations supposedly impartial and objective? Why are they taking sides?

“Actions are visible, though motives are secret.”

Curious that the most vocal all have possible personal motives

Drillon – senate presidency

Cayetano – wifes court case – election

Tupas – fathers court case

Estrada – presidency

Re-electionists

Imo, Cory gave back abs-cbn to the lopezes years ago and it’s time for the lopezes to help the cojuangcos retain ownership of hacienda luisita. That’s why they sent abs-cbn’s legal department to help the prosec. The same set of losers, i mean lawyers, who handled abs’ cases against willie revillame, which they lost.

Are these private prosecutors being paid? If so then it’s a waste of public funds because it is the job of the congressmen prosecutors to prosecute. Hindi sila tumatanggap ng sahod galing kay juan de la cruz para magpapogi lang sa harap ng camera!

‘Politics has nothing to do with fair play. It
is bound up with hatred, jealousy, hypocrisy, boastfulness,
disregard of all rules, and sadistic pleasure in
witnessing defeat. In other words, it is war
minus the shooting.’
George Orwell – adapted

Vidal – will not win employee of the month.

Karen jimeno – miss photogenic

Drillon – prosecutor and spokesman. Also wants to be judge, jury, and executioner. Already building the scaffolding

Political process – the rights of the individual and due legal process dont apply

ABS-CBN – providing the prosecution with 5 abs-cbn lawyers free! Mmmm

Conflict of interest – ask abs-cbn lawyers

Payback – who will buy NBN network at knockdown price!?

Cuevas – old dog showing young (b)ucks a trick or two

Makati bars/restaurants – full of laughing/drinking congressmen and their ‘daughters’!. Does impeachment mean holiday.

Coronas address – abs-cbn published it! Irresponsible and unethical

P-noy – “he has adjusted his schedule to monitor the trial” lacierda. Does impeachment mean no work – as usual

It’s the hacienda, people! – the elephant is getting out of the room

my belief is, noynoy is after the head of gloria, the supposed crowning
glory of his presidency more than anything else…

and gloria must be very very thankful to corona for at least at the moment
she is taking the backseat…..

and she must be praying very very hard that corona will not be convicted
or else, she will surely share the burden…

you said 5 lawyers from prosecution team — i counted 4 only. isnt Maximilian Uy and Maximilian Joseph Uy, one and the same person?

21 01 2012

you might be correct, but does it really matter whether it is a 4 or 5? i think what is significant is the obvious bias of this media organization and the vested interest that this might imply.

Di ako maka relate sa Meryl Streep, Megan Fox analogy. Local na lang… say: Nora Aunor vs. Kris Aquino. Yan! maintindihan ko pa yan! o kaya Vilma Santos vs. Katrina Halili.

foremost, yang SALN na yan is not the absolute truth of their

assets, liabilities and net worth, they are filed just for the sake

of filing, ganuon laannngggg yun

21 01 2012
eddibumangon

senior, kung bubusisiin natin ang SALN ng lahat ng tongressmen mula ng mahalal sila sa tongreso, ilan kaya sa kanila ang lalabas na malinis?
my fearless guess is less than 10%…

20 01 2012

isn’t it common sense that the copies of corona’s SALNs must be
turned over to the impeachment court? for what then is the purpose
of bringing it over? for props?

of course the great cuevas already argued that the purpose is just
to show that indeed corona filed his SALNs, but purposely playing
dumb, as if he is not aware that the ulterior motive of the prosecution
is to see the contents of the said documents

MOIRA GALLAGA (@moiragallaga)

Great piece as usual Heckler, you have summed the day in a brilliant manner. The comparison of retired Justice Cuevas and the prosecution lawyers as a dramatic exchange between Meryl Streep and Megan Fox is so apt, except that compared to the prosecutors, Megan Fox has the consolation of being hot. Hehe.
