HOPEY NEW YEAR!

29 12 2007

Hopeful

A Social Weather Stations survey showed that 91% of Filipino adults are entering the New Year with hope rather than fear. Of course, that figure would have been much lower if Pulse Asia conducted the survey.

Hopeful II

A Social Weather Stations survey showed that 91% of Filipino adults are entering the New Year with hope rather than fear. Expect the figure to drop to negative 91 percent (-91%) when former senator Sergio Osmeña III releases his own commissioned survey.

Hopeful III

An SWS survey showed that 91% of Filipino adults are entering the New Year with hope rather than fear. ABS-CBN and the opposition refused to believe the survey and are suing the SWS for allegedly releasing tainted survey results.

Bhutto’s Assassination

Conflicting reports about what caused the death of former Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto have surfaced. The Pakistani government said she died from a fractured skull after hitting her head on a piece of her vehicle. But Bhutto’s supporters claim she was shot three times by a suicide bomber who subsequently ignited explosives near Bhutto’s motorcade. Sought for a comment, the Philippine National Police said the suicide bomber could have actually been carrying an LPG tank.

Bhutto’s Assassination II

In the wake of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Presidential Security Group chief Brig. Gen. Romeo Prestoza assured that a “copycat” attack against President Arroyo was highly unlikely. Filipinos are not that stupid to die with her.

Bhutto’s Assassination III

The streets of Pakistan are in chaos following the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto. President Arroyo is reportedly worried and alarmed… because if a similar incident would happen to her, it might just spark the biggest street party ever.

Poster Boys

Hoping to scare the public out of using firecrackers to usher in 2008, the Department of Health presented to the media a father and son who each lost an arm during last year’s New Year revelry. The moral of the story? Do not play firecrackers… with your dads! Solohin n’yo na lang!

Zambo Loves Jalosjos

Municipal and city mayors in Zamboanga del Norte have announced plans to wear black armbands and to lower the flag to half-mast in their respective towns to protest the Department of Justice’ “condemnable” order to re-arrest convicted child rapist and former congressman Romeo Jalosjos. The mayors vowed to wear black armbands until Jalosjos is given justice and released from detention… and to really show how much they love him, the mayors will send their 11-year-old daughters and granddaughters to San Ramon Penal Colony in Zamboanga City where Jalosjos is currently detained to keep him company for the New Year.

Priests’ Brawl

Greek Orthodox and Armenian priests attacked each other with brooms and stones last Thursday during the annual cleaning of the Church of the Nativity in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. But the brawl was downplayed by the Vatican saying the priests were just fighting over the last piece of an Apple iPhone raffled off by Pope Benedict XI that day.

Jalosjos Rearrested

Convicted child rapist and former Zamboanga Del Norte representative Romeo Jalosjos, who left the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City and flew to Dipolog City on Saturday night was re-arrested Sunday morning. Jalosjos was so frustrated because Dipolognon children who were supposed to welcome him with sampaguita garlands were already in bed when he arrived and were still asleep when he was re-arrested. He was never given a chance to hug them.

Jalosjos Rearrested II

Reports say prison authorities in San Ramon Penal Colony in Zamboanga City were apprehensive at first in taking escaped convict Romeo Jalosjos into custody… understandably because a number of its prisoners were minors.

Jalosjos Rearrested III

Relatives of convicted child rapist former congressman Romeo Jalosjos want him transferred to the rest house of former President Joseph Estrada in Tanay, Rizal… arguing that they actually have something in common: Si Erap, mahilig sa batang babae. Si Jalosjos, mahilig sa bata.

Estrada & El Shaddai

Speaking before a crowd at the El Shaddai gathering led by spiritual leader Mike Velarde in Parañaque City Saturday night, former president Joseph Estrada insisted that he did not steal even a single cent from the government. That is the latest Erap joke.

Newspaper Survey

A Philippine Daily Inquirer report claims it is the country’s most widely read broadsheet according to the latest survey conducted by Nielsen Media Research. The Inquirer is lucky – ABS-CBN doesn’t own the Philippine Star or the Manila Bulletin.

Newspaper Survey II

According to Nielsen Media Research, the Philippine Daily Inquirer is the country’s most widely read broadsheet followed by the Manila Bulletin and the Philippine Star. Rumors say Gabby Lopez is planning to file a case against the broadsheet because it has caused an alarming decline in the viewership of TV Patrol.

Ceasefire

The Philippine National Police said the four-day ceasefire declared by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army will be “honored” by the police… meaning NPA rebels have four days to torch Globe cell sites and the police will not intervene. Promise.

MMFF: Movies Made From Filth

The Metro Manila Film Festival officially kicks off today. That means, from December 25, 2007 to January 6, 2008 Filipinos will have to deal with the excruciating experience of watching flicks starring Jinggoy Estrada, Bong Revilla, and Manny Pacquiao. Thank goodness for video pirates, I will be spared from this ordeal.

Congressional Bonuses

House Speaker Jose De Venecia Jr. approved the release of more than 47 million pesos in cash bonuses for 236 lawmakers, or 200 thousand pesos for each congressman. In case you’re wondrin’ who this guy is… Jose De Venecia Jr. was the same man who called for “moral revolution” to eradicate corruption in government a few months ago.

Congressional Bonuses II

While ordinary government servants will receive a modest and delayed bonus of 10,000 pesos, 236 congressmen will each get 200 thousand pesos this Christmas – something that should serve as a lesson to Batasan bombers: the next time you plan to blow up the place, plant the explosives inside and not just in the lobby. That’ll certainly help the government save millions in taxpayers’ money.

Congressional Bonuses III

Congressmen will each receive a 200 thousand peso-bonus this Christmas. But unlike in the previous years, the money won’t be given in checks but in cash – because House Deputy Speaker Amelita Villarosa of the “Malacañang bribery scandal” fame volunteered to do the distribution.

Frustrated Jalosjos

Convicted child rapist and ex-congressmen Romeo Jalosjos expressed frustration over the Justice Department’s claim that he should not be released until 2010. Jalosjos allegedly told the prisons director that either he is released before Christmas or ‘wag na lang… because after December 25, less children would be roaming around his neighborhood.

Erap’s Autobiography

Reports say ex-president Joseph Estrada has started writing his autobiography. When asked about the highlight of his work, Erap replied, “Siyempre, ‘yong mga kotse ko. Kaya nga autobiography ‘di ba?”

ROMEO O ROMEO!

Jalosjos Freed?

Unverified and conflicting reports say convicted child rapist and former congressman Romeo Jalosjos has been released from the New Bilibid Prisons before dawn today, December 16. Immediately after the release, Jalosjos decided to attend the first day of the Simbang Gabi but carefully instructed his bodyguards to choose a church “na maraming bata.”

Jalosjos Freed? II

Following his reported release from prison, convicted child rapist and former congressman Romeo Jalosjos proceeded to his Katarungan Village residence in Muntinlupa City… where he now patiently waits for children carolers.

Jalosjos Freed? III

Earlier reports say Dipolog City residents are preparing a festive welcome for convicted child rapist and ex-Zamboanga representative Romeo Jalosjos who is due to return to the city on Thursday, December 20. Surprises for Jalosjos include a street party with free food and drinks, a free concert, and a free public showing of the past episodes of Jalosjos’ favorite tv shows – Batibot and Sesame Street.

VACC to Jalosjos: “Apologize”

Crime watchdog Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption called on former Zamboanga del Norte Rep. Romeo Jalosjos, a convicted child rapist, to apologize to his victim. Jalosjos allegedly replied, “Sure, pero kiss muna.”

In Other News…
VS.

Broadcast giant ABS-CBN sued top survey firm AGB Nielsen Media Research for allegedly releasing survey results which, according to Gabby Lopez, could “possibly” be tainted. The Lopez network is so desperate to reclaim the No. 1 spot, it’s now seeking the help of the courts.

ABS-CBN vs. AGB Nielsen II

For allegedly releasing survey results that could possibly be biased, ABS-CBN has sued top survey firm AGB Nielsen Media Research. If the network still fails to reclaim the No. 1 spot, next to be sued are the televiewers.

JDV III Cancels Wedding

Jose “Joey” De Venecia III and his fiancée have cancelled their wedding originally scheduled on December 20 because of security threats. The controversial businessman claims to have seen strangers in front of his house, just last week, taking pictures. Apparently, village security failed to inform him that those men were just Svenson representatives scouting for a potential endorser.

SEA Games MVP

For winning four gold medals, a silver and a bronze, Miguel Molina (who represented the Philippines), was named Most Valuable Player in the recently concluded Southeast Asian Games. Molina wasn’t able to receive the trophy and cash prize though because he has already left for California where he grew up, studied, and currently resides. Now that the SEA Games are over, Team Philippines has to return the athletes it “borrowed.” (Aside from Molina, two other “Filipino” swimmers who have returned to their homeland – the United States, were James Walsh and Daniel Coakley.)

Best Actor?

“Jinggoy Estrada deserves to win best actor for his performance in Katas ng Saudi, an official entry in 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival,” according to an entertainment writer of the Manila Bulletin. But don’t take her seriously. That’s why she’s an “entertainment” writer. She’s just tryin’ to be funny.

After militant transport group Piston’s “Tigil Pasada,” another Joma Sison-allied group, the militant Pamalakaya will set a “fish holiday” or “Tigil Pangingisda” in January 2008 to protest the oil price increase. Unconfirmed reports say, to show its support for Piston and Pamalakaya, leftist women’s group Gabriela will soon stage its “Tigil Hugas” day while militant youth group Kabataan will launch a “Tigil Friendster” drive.

Suit vs. Civilians on Manila Pen Siege Junked

A Makati judge dismissed rebellion charges against former vice president Teofisto Guingona and 18 other civilians who were arrested during the Manila Peninsula Hotel siege. The judge couldn’t find anything rebellious in Guingona when he stared at him.

Holiday Ceasefire

President Arroyo has approved a recommendation to declare a three-week unilateral ceasefire with the Communist rebels in observance of the Christmas season. For three weeks, government troops will not interfere as New People’s Army rebels extort from businessmen, collect revolutionary taxes, and torch Globe Telecom cell site.
Rebellion Suit vs. Guingona Junked

The rebellion case against former vice president Teofisto Guingona who joined Antonio Trillanes’ failed revolt in Makati City has been dismissed. Asked why he junked the case against the 79-year-old Guingona, the judge said, “Hindi niya alam ang kanyang ginagawa.”

Edu vs. Bong

For 2008, the Optical Media Board will get zero budget from the Senate following a heated verbal tussle between OMB Chairman Edu Manzano and Sen. Bong Revilla. Reports say when Edu addressed Bong simply as “Mr. Revilla” in several tv interviews, his fellow senators felt insulted… totally ignoring the fact that Bong’s victory itself as a senator was far more insulting.

Leviste to Saudi

Former Batangas governor Jose Antonio Leviste was allowed by a Makati court to travel to Saudi Arabia for a pilgrimage to Mecca next week. Leviste will seek forgiveness from Allah for his sins: for land grabbing, for murdering his closest aide, and for marrying Loren Legarda.

COMING VERY SOON

11 12 2007

I AM A BIT BUSY this week so let me just give you two blind items and one breaking news instead.

First up… BREAKING NEWS: I was in a “showbiz” meeting last night (Monday), and it was there where I learned that the camp of former president Joseph Estrada is planning to produce an Erap biopic. The source instructed everyone not to write about the item because Jinggoy daw will be the one to announce it soon. Inasmuch as the “instruction” covered only newspaper columnists and tv reporters, I deemed it safe to write about the scoop in my blog.

So there. Coming Soon: “The Life Story of Joseph Estrada.” Guess who’s being groomed to play the title role? Who else but Jinggoy!

Lest we forget, 2010 is just two years away… a political comeback is always a possibility. Should Malacañang be alarmed?

Blind Item No. 1:

This story happened a few years back but I’m sharing this anyway since the politician involved has been in the news recently.

A talk show writer was assigned to do a story on the politician. The writer included a segment on the politician’s dalliances and used the term “pambababae ni _____.” The politician, who caught the episode, felt slighted by the term used. In an apparent abuse of authority, Mr. Politician went directly to a network executive and asked for the head of the writer who happened to be a really good one, and very loyal to the station.

Luckily for the writer, Mr. Politician’s influential manager intervened and took the cudgels for him. The manager even told her talent, “Hay naku ___! Mabuti nga pambababae lang ang sinulat ni ___ ‘noh! Hindi ‘yong panlalalaki mo!”

I was told that Mr. Politician, despite his affluent and high profile origins, used to be the kept man of a couple of showbiz gays before he made it this big.

FAST FORWARD TO DECEMBER 2007…

After a very recent television guesting, Mr. Politician again expressed his displease over the host’s handling of the interview. He berated the show’s talent coordinator who was also his paid publicist.

When the influential manager heard about the latest incident, she could only say: “Alam n’yo sa kanilang apat (referring to the politician’s equally-prominent friends), siya ang pinakatarantado.” Direct from the horse’s mouth!

Do you know who this man is? I’m not giving any clues. I’d rather do some recycling at home to help save Mother Earth.

Blind Item No. 2:

Luxembourg is in his 60s. He’s good at scoops. A respected figure in the entertainment industry, everyone calls him Tito.

Venezuela is a single father. He first appeared in a tv commercial, was once one of the most sought-after models, until he decided to shed his wholesome image to become a sexy actor.

Projects for Venezuela became scarce. Luxembourg seized the opportunity and offered “help.”

They are now an item.
Clues:

Where can you find Luxembourg? Just look up the sky because he’s somewhere out there.

Venezuela doesn’t use landlines anymore because he’s got a cell phone now.

Happy guessing! Heckling continues Thursday…

Bad Politician II

In a meeting with British businessmen, President Arroyo admitted that she’s “a very bad politician.” And in case you haven’t noticed, she’s so good at it!

Bad Politician III

In a meeting with British businessmen, President Arroyo made a startling admission: “I am a very bad politician.” There goes the Understatement of the Year.

Danny Lim: “I was forced.”

Hear this: Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim insists he was “forcibly dragged out” of court to join the Trillanes walkout and the Manila Peninsula Hotel siege. Tanong: Ano sa palagay ninyo si Lim – tanga o sinungaling?

Jalosjos Pardon

Unconfirmed reports say President Arroyo will pardon convicted child rapist and ex-congressman Romeo Jalosjos who is detained at the New Bilibid Prison. The president wants to decongest the facility before Antonio Trillanes et al are transferred there.

Jalosjos Pardon II

According to reports, President Arroyo plans to pardon former Zamboanga representative and convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos on or before December 16. Jalosjos described the plan as “very timely” – primarily because it’s Christmas and children are more “accessible.”

THE AFTERMATH

4 12 2007

ABS-CBN & the Manila Pen Siege

Authorities have ordered ABS-CBN to turn over raw news footage of last week’s siege at the Manila Peninsula Hotel. The refusal of the ABS-CBN crew to heed police orders to leave the hotel has been interpreted by some as “conspiring with the rebels.” I wonder why authorities are making such a big fuss about that single incident when ABS-CBN commentators are doing just the same thing on DZMM everyday.

ABS-CBN & the Manila Pen Siege II

The Philippine National Police ordered ABS-CBN to turn over raw news footage of last week’s siege at the Manila Peninsula Hotel. Authorities wanted to confirm rumors that the person seen wearing a wacky wig was reporter Ces Drilon.

ABS-CBN & the Manila Pen Siege III

ABS-CBN reporter Ces Drilon admitted that she was able to talk to rebel soldier Antonio Trillanes the midnight before the Manila Peninsula Hotel siege happened last Thursday. Drilon tried to fish for more info from Trillanes but was forced to hang up when the navy lieutenant began asking, “What are you wearing?”

Man With A Wig Identified

The mystery man who was wearing a wacky wig and a Magdalo armband during the Manila Peninsula Hotel siege has been positively identified as an employee of the Makati City Hall. He is Mayor Binay’s personal stylist.

Binay’s Employees and Trillanes’ Revolt

Mayor Jejomar Binay who was in Tondo, Manila with Joseph Estrada when the Manila Peninsula siege took place last Thursday strongly denied that Makati City Hall employees joined Antonio Trillanes’ failed revolt. Binay was 100 percent sure that no one volunteered to join the Trillanes uprising because Makati City Hall employees do not attend rallies for free.

Villar’s Resolution

Senate President Manuel Villar has filed a resolution urging the Senate to look into the Makati standoff particularly the arrest of media men, the imposition of a curfew, the accompanying issuances by Malacañang, and of course, the wearing of a wacky wig by one of Mayor Binay’s security aides which has undermined wig-wearing people like Villar.

Examining Her Conscience

After the Manila Peninsula standoff, Manila Bishop Teodoro Bacani Jr. advised President Arroyo to examine her conscience. Malacañang said the president would likely heed Bacani’s advise as soon as she finds the conscience – it’s been missing for several years now.

Elsewhere

Manolo Abaya asks: “So why were there no civilian crowds, no mobs-for-hire, at Manila Pen in 2007? Where were Binay’s toothless crones and unemployed drug addicts from the squatter colonies?”

Columnist Victor Agustin said GMA 7 website editor Malou Mangahas has resigned following the cancellation of her weekly show Palaban.

Sudan’s President has pardoned the British teacher who was jailed for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

THEN WHAT?

1 12 2007

Manila Pen Siege

Antonio Trillanes, Danilo Lim and other Magdalo members who were on trial at the Makati City RTC staged a walkout, strolled down the streets of Makati, holed up at the Manila Peninsula Hotel, withdrew their support from their commander-in-chief (again), demanded the resignation of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (anew), and hours later, surrendered to the authorities in handcuffs. Had I known that what I was watching was just a replay of the 2003 “Oakwood show,” I would have just switched channels.

Trillanes’ Call

During the walkout, Trillanes called on everyone who wants to oust Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to join him. Now that explains why almost all members of  ABS-CBN News were all there.

Shocking ‘Em

The Philippine National Police defended the use of armored personnel carriers against the rebel occupants of the Manila Peninsula hotel as being part of its “shock” strategy to force them to surrender. The PNP believes it has succeeded… judging by the look on Guingona’s face.

Argee Guevarra, Brave?

While inside the Manila Peninsula, Trillanes supporter and lawyer Argee Guevarra of Sanlakas boldly stated and I paraphrase, “Handa akong magbuwis ng buhay at kung kinakailangang maging bayani alang-alang sa bansa, handa akong mamatay ngayon.” Yup, it was raining outside. But inside, mas malakas ang hangin.

ABS-CBN Eyes Suit

ABS-CBN news head Maria Ressa reportedly considers filing a suit against the police for arresting its reporters. Ressa’s move to defend the reporters surprised ABS-CBN news people who are more used to receiving memos and suspension orders from her.

GMA’s Coverage

GMA 7 is not keen on filing a suit against the police unlike ABS-CBN. In the first place, was GMA 7 present during the event? (Whatever happened to you guys?! Mukhang t*e ang coverage n’yo!)

People From Tondo

During the Makati Pen standoff, police stopped four jeepneys filled with Tondo residents while on their way to Makati City. They said they were paid to attend a funeral. Apparently, the organizers fooled them: Teofisto Guingona may have been wearing a Barong Tagalog that day but clearly, he was still very much alive!

People From Tondo II

A Tondo resident who’s also a member of the People’s Movement Against Poverty closely identified with convicted plunderer Joseph Estrada admitted that they were paid 200 pesos each to join the Makati crowd. Well, consider that as a positive development. During a previous Makati City rally, they only received 150 pesos each.

An Exchange of Text Messages

“You know why Trillanes staged a walk out? Kasi naubusan ng ticket sa concert ni Akon!”

“In fairness to Vice President Guingona … kahit saan siya magpunta… sa Makati Av man, sa korte o sa hotel, iisa ang expression ng kanyang mukha. Parang natutulog lang!”

“Dapat hindi na pinalabas ng Manila Pen si Guingona. Eh kung mahamugan ‘yun at bumigay?”

“It’s not true that Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon has gone into hiding.

Feeling!)

I Love Miriam!

Interviewed over DZMM on the arrest of the members of the media, Sen. Miriam Defensor said: “Doon ako hindi sang-ayon kasi wala namang serious and imminent danger.  Kapag ang media ay ginamit para manawagan na mag-aklas ang tao at ang mga tao ay lumabas para pabagsakin ang gobyerno, doon sila dapat arestuhin. Pero ano bang reaksyon ng tao sa panawagan ni Trillanes? Wala. Naghihikab lang ang tao. So nasaan ang imminent danger (sa paghihikab)?”

Have a safe weekend!
